The first selection on this album entitled "Jim's Song" was composed by one of the choir members, Jon Miller, as a tribute to the late Jim Quinlan, who was a key figure in all the activities of the folk choir over the past five years. On Thursday, March 30, 1972, the dread disease of leukemia removed him from the ranks of his exhuberant confreres, who frequently have sung the hymn . . . The Lord Is Taking Us Home, and now one of their own members has gone ahead to join the choirs of heaven.
On Sunday, May 7, 1972, the choir in a well deserved tribute to a generous youth, gave the Jimmy Quinlan Benefit Show to an audience filled Centennial Hall. The proceeds from this concert were handed over to the local unit of the Canadian Cancer Society for research purposes. All in attendance at this performance were reminded of the main purpose of the choir which is to spread the message of joy and hope. At the outset a note of sadness prevailed but it soon gave way to strains of joyful response, sparked by the personal enthusiasm of all the choir members, for they were doing their thing in memory of one of their own.
All of the numbers appearing on this album were sung at this concert with the same dedication and enjoyment that has been characteristic of these youthful singers who have captured a place in the hearts of countless audiences wherever they have appeared in Ontario and throughout the Atlantic Provinces.
This summer the choir will be touring through Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia. This trip will signify the fulfillment of a desire to cross this great land of ours spreading the moving message of this inspiring choir . . . that God is in our land, that His SPI RIT is at work and that we are called upon to reflect His Presence in our lives before our fellowmen.
As one listens to this album, one cannot help but realize that the choir members really enjoy the unity they have achieved through singing. Each member is well aware that his or her talent is small when it stands alone, but together they take on a greater dimension which is all the more generous when they put themselves out for others. It is their express hope that others in our land may become increasingly aware of the SPIRIT in this great country, so that tomorrow might usher in a brighter day filled with hope and joy for those who are downtrodden and weary because of the many burdens that some thoughtless members of society have placed upon their backs. All the members of St. Andrew's Folk Choir sincerely hope you will enjoy this recording as much as they enjoyed making it possible.
